The Greek myth of Medusa is a clear representation of patriarchy and how it is not a fad and its origin is ancient. Medusa was raped by Poseidon in the temple of Athena and when she discovered it, she turned her into a "monster" with snake hair and anyone who looked at her face would end up turned to stone. It was Perseus who decapitated Medusa while she was sleeping and gave her head to Athena after using it in his battles as a weapon.

We can see a clear parallel with what continues to happen today, re-victimizing victims of gender violence, judging them for what they have suffered. Medusa experienced the injustices of being a woman. Raped by a God, she was banished and her story has been remembered by placing her as the executioner and murderer when she was clearly a victim. In the history of art, as well as in film, television, etc., this myth has been recreated, perpetuating the image of Medusa as a “bad woman.” Celini’s sculpture in 1554 is famous, where he represents Perseus triumphant over Medusa’s decapitated body. In Perseus’ hand we see her head high up, as a way of representing the power of the “Medici” family over the Florentine people at that time. In pictorial art, the representations of Bernini, Rubens and the worst of all, Caravaggio as one of the bloodiest Medusas, were famous.

With this piece we want to pay tribute to the real figure of Medusa, a woman who was raped and convicted of it, murdered, and to once again claim the injustices suffered by women victims of gender violence.
