Meaning
The dagger or athame is a very powerful symbol that has gained popularity today through tattoos. Historically, it was used as a complementary weapon in medieval duels or battles and later the Wicca religion adopted it as a magical element for its rituals with the purpose of directing energies. Its function is to direct the witch's energy, to draw the circle of power or to perform a spell. It is also used by raising the dagger as a greeting, to summon the four elements during the drawing of the ritual circle.
The dagger represents bravery, protection, the courage of a warrior and fighter. It can also represent independence, death and sacrifice, but properly understood, death can always be a change of cycle, of pattern, breaking with that which harms and hurts us. Cutting off that which harms us, whether it is our own or someone else's.
