The Greek myth of Medusa is a clear representation of patriarchy, and how it is not a fad and has ancient origins. Medusa was raped by Poseidon in the temple of Athena. Upon discovering this, Athena turned her into a "monster" with snake hair, turning anyone who looked at her face into stone. It was Perseus who decapitated Medusa while she slept and gave her head to Athena after using it as a weapon in his battles.
We can see a clear parallel with what continues to happen today, revictimizing victims of gender-based violence, judging them for what they have suffered. Medusa experienced the injustices of being a woman. Raped by a god, she was banished, and her story has been remembered as both the executioner and the murderer when she was clearly a victim. In art history, as well as in film, television, etc., this myth has been recreated, perpetuating the image of Medusa as the "bad woman." Celini's 1554 sculpture depicting Perseus triumphant over Medusa's decapitated body is famous. Perseus's hand holds the head of Medusa, a way of representing the power of the Medici family over the Florentine people at that time. In pictorial art, Bernini, Rubens, and, worst of all, Caravaggio's depiction of her as one of the bloodiest Medusas.
With this piece, we want to pay tribute to the real figure of Medusa, a woman raped and condemned for it, murdered, and to once again highlight the injustices suffered by women victims of gender-based violence.
